It has been exactly a month since the developer preview of Windows Phone 8.1 saw daylight. Careful estimates peg the number of deployments at around one million.
Well, the million that installed that build now have an update to look forward to.
This is the first refresh of the new mobile operating system, and was officially announced by the Windows Phone lead at Microsoft, Joe Belfiore:
“Running #WP8.1 Developer Preview? GO CHECK FOR UPDATES! we have news bits with plenty of bug fixes including some battery improvements!”
From the look of things, this new update primarily fixes the bugs that were present in the initial release and issues that users have reported. The message does state that it does contain improvements to battery life, so that’s that. But it is safe to say that there probably are no new features in this build.
To deploy it, all you have to do is go to Settings > Phone Updates > Check for Updates.
Microsoft are also readying up for the release of the final version of Windows Phone 8.1, which according to its product lifecycle page should be available next month. June 24 is the start of this lifecycle, which means wireless carriers could well start deployment by this time.
Expect plenty of updates and refreshes, though, in the three years Microsoft will offer updates to Windows Phone 8.1 users.
Lars Anyone experienced issues with the preview? I’m always leery with downloading updates early.
